Ilwaco, WA - Carol Lynn Ockfen, 76, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, in hospice care in Longview, WA. Born on November 4, 1948, in Olympia, she was the youngest child of John and Dorothy Ockfen. She grew up in Spanaway and attended Bethel High School. In her later years, she spent much of her time on the Long Beach Peninsula, a special place and community close to her heart.
Coming from a family of teachers, she followed in the footsteps of her mother and siblings, pursuing a career as an educator, and later serving as a counselor and administrator. She earned a master's degree in education from Pacific Lutheran University and worked in the Bethel, Clover Park, and Ocean Beach School Districts, dedicating her professional life to inspiring a love of learning.
Carol Lynn was a longtime member and past president of the Rotary Club of Southwest Pacific County Peninsula. Being a Rotarian was a special honor for her, particularly because of the organization's focus on service. One of her greatest passions was PolioPlus, Rotary International's campaign to eradicate polio worldwide.
Never one to be slowed down, she brought energy and curiosity to everything she did. With her independent spirit, Carol Lynn loved to travel and see the world. She made many trips to Europe and had a fondness for Sweden and Germany, appreciating the chance to explore her family roots. She also enjoyed playing lively games of pickleball with friends, visiting Lakewold Gardens, and sharing her love of history while volunteering at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Above all, she loved time spent with her family and friends, especially her granddaughters, who lovingly called her "Farmor."
She is survived and deeply missed by her former husband, Mike Metcalf; her son, Michael Ockfen Metcalf, and his wife, Elizabeth; her cherished granddaughters, Claire and Jillian; her sisters-in-law, Jeris Ockfen and Evie Ockfen; and many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends who loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John "Jack" Ockfen and Gary Ockfen; and her sister, Dorothy "Marilyn" Goddard.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 2, at 1 p.m. at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, WA. An additional service will be held in the Tacoma area at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rotary's PolioPlus Fund at endpolio.org/donate.
