Edwin McCall (Ed) Obituary

If the true measure of a great man is how he treats the little man, then Ed McCall was a colossus -yet much too humble to realize it.

Ed loved his family above all things. In old photos you can see him holding one of his five babies after another and grinning from ear to ear just as if he had no clue of the trouble we would get into or how much dance lessons cost.

When the family went tent camping, Ed would indulge in a rare beer (or two) and then tell the tale of how a simple farm boy from Keiser met, courted and married a beautiful southern belle in New Orleans while stationed there with the Coast Guard during WW II. At this point all us kids would be smirking with embarrassment.

How a man who worked six (and sometimes seven) days a week could find the energy to both water ski and snow ski with his children, ride dirt bikes, go on lots of hikes, attend tedious recitals and even help with homework remains a mystery.

Speaking of hard work, Ed turned a Goodyear tire store into a Les Schwab store and then opened a second store in Seaside. He was dedicated to his business and truly cared about his employees and customers. He was as honest as the day is long which all contributed to his well-deserved success.

Ed was passionate about fishing and hunting all his life and a first-rate marksman. He could shoot the fuzz off a gnat's naval with both a rifle and a bow.

In his later years, Ed reveled in travel to other countries with his devoted wife. He really enjoyed other cultures, their history and food. There wasn't anything he wouldn't eat except "fish head stew" in Tahiti which he said he couldn't get past his nose.

Ed finished up his days at The Gardens in Mazatlan, Mexico, a beautiful assisted living facility with a superb staff. He and his wife owned a condo there with a fabulous view of the marina, where they spent their winters for over 30 years.

Ed is survived by his children Mike, Doug, John and Liz, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was preceded in death by his wife, Jan, and daughter, Julie.
