Astoria, OR - John (Jack) Howard Olson passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2025. Jack was born on October 7, 1938, in Portland, Oregon. Jack's family moved to Seaside when he was in grade school. Jack graduated from Seaside High School in 1956. In high school he excelled at sports even being recruited to the Linfield baseball team before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1956 until 1960.
In 1962, he met the love of his life, Jerrie Ann McCoy through his cousin. Jack & Jeri married on November 17, 1962. Jack pursued his union carpenter's apprenticeship and had a lifetime career as a respected carpenter owning his own company, Jack Olson Construction, along with other construction adventures.
In 1966, Jack & Jeri purchased the Green Mountain Ranch and lived there until his death. The Green Mountain Ranch was one of Jack's greatest enjoyments from turning the homestead cabin into Jeri's dream home.
August of 1964, Jack & Jeri welcomed their first son, Greg. And two years later in July of 1966, their son Mark was born. Together as a family they worked Green Mountain Ranch including raising cows and the yearly harvesting of hay, not a fun task.
In Jack's early years, he discovered deer hunting in the Umatilla Forest. It became a yearly tradition to take the family and friends East to hunt and camp. Later they enjoyed going to camp over Memorial Day weekend and going to the Spray Rodeo. It was a tradition that the family loved to do together and has now been passed on to his grandson, Cole and his friends.
Jerrie (Jeri) Ann Olson passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026. Jerrie Ann McCoy was born February 10, 1944, in Ohio. Jeri's family moved to Oregon in 1956.
Jeri graduated from Gresham High School in 1962. During high school Jeri was a cheerleader and worked at a local bakery. The summer of 1962 she was in the Miss Gresham pageant and won the formal gown portion of the contest.
In 1962, her best friend's cousin Jack Olson, caught a glimpse of Jeri and that is when their love story started. Jack & Jeri married that same year and lived in Gresham for a few years before moving to Green Mountain in 1966.
Jeri was a homemaker but had different jobs until she was hired at Astoria School District as a classroom aide. Jeri's work ethic and the love of working at the school moved her to the office and then the head secretary of Astoria High School from 1974 until 2004. Jeri loved a challenge and she pursued her bachelor's degree in 2004 from Eastern Oregon State University, which was the same year she retired from her secretary position. After earning her degree, she became a substitute teacher for the school district. She loved being a substitute teacher at the high school especially because two of her grandkids were students at the time.
Jeri loved anything outdoors and was the chaperone/advisor for the Astoria High School ski club. Jeri also taught aerobics classes at the old Olney School gym. And was on the school board for the Olney School district.
Jack and Jeri's love story was an amazing ride and one that will continue through their sons and grandchildren. Jack and Jeri are survived by their sons, Greg (Jeni) and Mark (Jodi); grandchildren, Naomi (Mikey), Randall, Cole and Mallerie; brothers & sisters, Steve Olson, Don (Janey) Olson, Janet (Tracy) Hankins, Judy McCoy, Jimmy McCoy; brother in-law, Larry Lindgren; and many nieces and nephews.
